La Cava: Rice Culture, Sant Miquel and Delta Landscape

A prominent reference to rice culture in La Cava is the Cambra Arrossera de La Cava: it was founded in 1955, built between 1956 and 1958, and operated until 2003. In La Cava, rice culture, religious history and the landscape of the Ebro Delta come together in different forms.

Culture and History

The exhibition “Estibant la memòria” tells the story of rice cultivation in the municipality and of the Cambra Arrossera de La Cava. Another stop in the history of rice mills is Lo Molí dels Mirons, the first rice-milling industry in Deltebre, founded around 1905. Mercado de la Cava is a commercial and social meeting place in the La Cava neighbourhood, where local products take centre stage.

La Cava has a parish dedicated to Saint Michael. The Sant Miquel church was consecrated on 29 June 1949 and has a single-nave basilica layout with side chapels and a square bell tower. The first chapel in La Cava was built in 1710. The Festes Majors de La Cava are listed in the catalogue of Catalonia’s festive heritage. The programme of La Passió de la Cava 2026 included performances on 22 and 29 March in the parish hall of Sant Miquel church in La Cava.

Rice Cultivation and Water

Around 1700, a change occurred in the river mouth near the present-day settlement of La Cava. The name La Cava may derive from a historic Sèquia, or drainage canal, which is believed to have influenced the course of the Ebro. The construction of the left irrigation canal in 1912 helped make rice cultivation the most important economic resource for La Cava and Jesús i Maria.

Historic Paths and Routes

Lo Carrilet de La Cava operated from 1927 to 1967 and was a 27-kilometre railway connection between La Cava and Tortosa. From La Cava, Lo Carrilet made access to healthcare, education, trade and cultural life easier. The former connection is therefore one of the historic traces linking the town with its regional surroundings, without describing a present-day railway connection itself.

The Vía Verde del Carrilet de la Cava nature trail is a cycling route of less than 7 kilometres along the left Ebro canal. Ruta cicloturista #9 from Deltebre runs along the waterfront from Molí dels Mirons to Maset. For planning a day, the two routes can be distinguished by mode of transport, length and course. The Ecomuseu in Deltebre is the information centre of the Delta de l’Ebre Natural Park and provides information about the Delta’s origins, history, architecture, festivals and traditions.

Nature

Bassa Canal Vell is the largest lagoon in the left half of the Delta and provides refuge or nesting sites for various bird species, including flamingos.
