Sarroqueta – Church and Mountain Views

Nature

Sarroqueta lies sheltered beneath a high cliff and overlooks the Barravés Valley. San Salvador de Sarroqueta offers panoramic views of Turbón, Castanesa, Vallibierna, Aneto, the Maladeta massif, Corronco de Durro, Llesp, Irgo and its mountain, as well as the Noguera de Tor Valley. The San Salvador de Sarroqueta hermitage lies at an altitude of 1,436 m.

The viewpoint therefore combines views over the valley with a broad mountain landscape. Alongside individual peaks, the panorama described also includes a mountain massif, surrounding villages and another valley. It is precisely this combination of different landscape features that characterises the view from San Salvador de Sarroqueta: the view extends from the named mountains via Llesp and Irgo to the Noguera de Tor Valley.

Culture

To the east of the settlement lies Santa Maria de Sarroqueta on the old road to Llesp. The church is a heavily modified Romanesque church with a single-nave layout and a rectangular-ended apse. On its western side, Santa Maria de Sarroqueta has a two-storey bell tower with a square ground plan. The church includes two side chapels, which were added to the original plan at a later date. The original building elements date Santa Maria de Sarroqueta to the late 12th or early 13th century.

Its location on the old road to Llesp is just as much part of the church site's appearance as its position east of the settlement. At Santa Maria de Sarroqueta, the location within the settlement, its connection to the road and the building's traditional form therefore come together directly.

The two side chapels were added to the original plan only later. Together with the heavily modified Romanesque structure, this results in a church whose present form reveals several construction phases. The dating remains linked to the late 12th or early 13th century. The building therefore includes both the single-nave layout and the rectangular-ended apse, as well as the western bell tower and the side chapels added later.

The dating expressly refers to the original building elements, while the two side chapels were added only later. Santa Maria de Sarroqueta thus makes it possible to distinguish between the basic structure and the subsequent extensions.

Routes

The municipal BTT programme includes the El Pont de Suert–Sarroqueta–Llesp–El Pont de Suert circular route. The El Pont de Suert–Llesp route passes close to Sarroqueta. The San Salvador de Sarroqueta hermitage can be visited along this route.

If you wish to reach the hermitage from the route, you must leave your bicycle and walk approximately 350 m up a steep incline.
