Santa Cristina De Aro: Coast, Nature and Culture
In Santa Cristina d’Aro stands the Església de Sant Martí de Romanyà, a pre-Romanesque church dating from the second half of the 10th century or the beginning of the 11th century.
Culture
Plana Basarda was located on a 300-metre-high plateau and had a defensive wall, a water cistern and around thirty grain silos. The Iberian settlement was inhabited there between the 4th and 1st centuries BC.
The Dolmen de la Cova d’en Daina is easily accessible to visitors. A prior appointment is required to visit the Gran Museu de la Màgia “La Casa Màgica”.
The collection of dioramas in Solius was begun in 1970. It has artistic, popular and religious value.
Santa Cristina d’Aro therefore brings together various types of evidence: a pre-Romanesque church, an Iberian settlement with preserved elements of its layout, a dolmen, and a collection whose artistic, popular and religious character is expressly documented.
Nature and Coast
The Massís de les Cadiretes is also known as l’Ardenya. It is listed in Catalonia as an area of geological interest. The granite formations include domes and rock towers.
The Ridaura runs through an agroforestry landscape. Along this stretch, it forms an important biological corridor.
The municipality’s coastal section includes Cala Canyet, Cala del Senyor Ramon and Vallpresona. The three small coves are surrounded by cliffs. Their seabeds are rich in species and feature Posidonia seagrass meadows.
A large part of the Gavarres and Ardenya forms part of the Natura 2000 network. These areas are also part of the Catalan plan for natural areas of special interest, known as PEIN, and are protected.
The municipality therefore brings together geological formations, an agroforestry landscape and protected coastal habitats. The coves of Cala Canyet, Cala del Senyor Ramon and Vallpresona form part of the coastal section described, as do the Posidonia seagrass meadows on their species-rich seabeds.
Routes and Activities
In Santa Cristina d’Aro, guided hiking, cycling and cultural heritage routes with experienced guides are organised throughout the year.
The literary tour is called Rodoreda–Romanyà. It explores places in Romanya De La Selva through the books and readings of Mercè Rodoreda.
The route to Castell de Solius follows paths and tracks. Its ascents and descents are gentle; one section of the ascent is more difficult.
A section of the former railway line runs from Santa Cristina d’Aro via Castell d’Aro and Platja d’Aro to Sant Feliu de Guíxols. The route can be walked or cycled.
At Cala Canyet, the sailing club offers, among other activities, sailing and diving courses.
The routes alternate between guided activities, a literary tour and paths with different characteristics. The section of the former railway line follows an earlier rail connection through several towns, while the route to Castell de Solius uses paths and tracks with an ascent of varying difficulty.
