Discover L’Escala: Holiday Apartments, Culture and Coastal Paths
The Museum of the Archaeological Excavations of Empúries houses the original sculpture of Asclepius discovered at the site. This connects a tangible testimony to l’Escala’s ancient past with the place where it was discovered.
Culture and History
The Museu de l’Anxova i la Sal (MASLE) is located in l’Escala’s former slaughterhouse. The building dates from 1913. Its former function is thereby retained as a historical reference point for the museum building.
The Centre d'interpretació del peix (MARAM) is an interactive interpretation centre about everyday life among fishermen. Its topics include boats, traditional fishing methods and fish auctions. The presentation therefore covers both work on the water and the related processes of the local fishing industry.
For groups, MARAM offers visits outside its regular opening hours by prior reservation.
The Alfolí de la Sal was built in 1697 as l’Escala’s large salt storehouse. The year refers to the building’s historical period of construction.

Coast and Paths
The Camí de Ronda pel poble is a linear route. Cala Montgó is its starting point and Sant Martí d’Empúries its destination. The route is therefore described as a connection between two named points rather than as a circular trail.
One section of the path forms part of the GR-92. Several bunkers can still be seen among the pine trees along this section. They date from its former military use. The traces of this use are therefore located within a specific section of the path.
The Ruta marinera + tastet d'anxoves combines a boat trip with the history of l’Escala and its defence against pirates. This combination also includes an anchovy tasting. The water route, local history and tasting are brought together in this experience.
Nature and Townscape
Rec del Molí is a sandy beach. Its sand is fine, and the beach includes dunes. Rocky landscapes are also part of Rec del Molí. Underwater, it has a diverse aquatic fauna. The beach therefore combines different types of landscape above and below the water’s surface.
The Litoral Route follows the coast of l’Escala. It connects built-up areas with unspoilt landscapes.
The route passes sandy beaches and coves. It also passes the old town.
Riells and Punta Montgó are newer neighbourhoods through which the Litoral Route passes. The route thus takes in both coastal sections and different parts of the town.
Cycling Route
The cycling section of the Litoral Route is 14.80 kilometres long and has a medium difficulty level.
The route takes about two hours by bicycle. This time estimate refers to travelling by bicycle and is stated alongside the aforementioned medium difficulty level.
It also includes sections that cannot be cycled. Bicycle use is therefore not possible on every section of this route.
Local Flavours
Anchovies from l’Escala are traditionally served in all the municipality’s bars and restaurants.
Pa amb tomata is one traditional way of serving them as an accompaniment.
The anchovies are also served as creative tapas.
