El Pla Del Penedès – Vineyards, Trails and Historic Sites

In El Pla del Penedès, vineyards cover 63% of the area. El Pla del Penedès is the starting and finishing point for numerous hiking, cycling and horse-riding routes through vineyards, including routes along the Via Augusta. The Bonavista route is 12.3 kilometres long.

Landscape and Trails

Ca l’Orpí is accessed via the historic path leading from Pujolet to the masia. The Creu de Terme stands at the crossroads of the paths from the town to Cal Fontanals and La Sala, approximately 180 metres south of the outskirts of El Pla, at the end of Carrer de la Creu. Documentary evidence of the Creu de Terme dates back to the 16th century. The Creu de Terme is surrounded by a triangular area known as Plaça de la Creu.

Culture and History

The bell tower of the Església de Santa Magdalena dates from the 16th to the 17th century, rests on the walls of the old crossing area and is 22.5 metres high. The Església de Santa Magdalena is a parish church and is protected as a cultural asset of local interest. It has Romanesque origins and has been documented since 1080.

The Centre Agrícola-Unió d’Agricultors is a Noucentista building and is protected as a cultural asset of local interest. It continues to host leisure and cultural activities and has a bar, a theatre or multipurpose hall, and two smaller rooms for activities. Ca l’Orpí is a freestanding medieval masia dating from the 12th century.

The Capella de Sant Jaume de Can Cerdà de Palou was built in the 17th century; the date 1623 is inscribed on the lintel. It is considered a cultural asset of local interest. The present building was created after a reconstruction; it has a single nave, a gabled roof and a bell gable.

L’Aguilera is a medieval rural masia surrounded by a defensive wall. It has a square tower, crowned with battlements, dating from the 19th century. A chapel dedicated to the Mare de Déu del Roser is located on the ground floor of the tower at L’Aguilera. The Antic sindicat was built in 1919 by several agricultural landowners from El Pla del Penedès. Until the 1930s, it was used to produce, store and sell wine.

Other destinations: Premià De Dalt, Alella, Santa Maria De Palautordera, Sant Pere De Riudebitlles, Castellet i la Gornal, Gurb, Gualba and Cabrils.

Water and Open Spaces

L’espai de la Bassa comprises a spring, a fountain, public washhouses, a former wastewater collector and surrounding garden land. The washhouses were built at the end of the 19th or the beginning of the 20th century. The L’espai de la Bassa area was restored in 2022 and equipped with an information board and a collection of current and historical photographs.

At La Font de l’Esteve, there is a picnic area above the spring; the shaded recreational area is equipped with benches, waste bins and underground lights. The Font de l’Esteve was formerly used to irrigate the surrounding gardens and later remained a meeting place for local residents.

Festivals

The Festa de les Torrades takes place on Carnival Sunday.
