Discover Salmerón: Culture, Springs and Ruta de la Lana
The church of Salmerón is predominantly Gothic in design; its main construction phase dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries. It has three portals, and a sundial is located on its eastern façade.
Culture and townscape
The Casa Grande de los Figueroa is a Renaissance palace that reflects Salmerón’s aristocratic past. At the same time, the town preserves an ensemble of traditional architecture from La Alcarria, with stone façades and portals. Those who compare individual buildings, façade details or the townscape as a whole will place emphasis on different aspects. The perspective can shift from detail to overall view without both approaches telling the same story.
Springs and surroundings
The Manantial del Calzadizo del Val spring is located in the immediate surroundings of Salmerón. The Manantial de la Fuentecilla, Fuente de Favolleda and Manantial de la Huerta de los Horcajos springs are also located nearby. The ancient site of Ercavica lies farther afield in the wider regional area. The springs and the ancient site represent different subject areas between nature and history. The spatial descriptions help keep destinations that are nearby, in the surrounding area and farther away in the wider region conceptually separate.
Hiking
The Ruta de la Lana enters the province of Guadalajara via the town of Salmerón. It includes a 21.55 km stage from Salmerón to Viana de Mondéjar. Along this route, the trail passes through holm oak forests and reaches a mountain saddle with beautiful views of the Tetas de Viana. Here, the route can be considered in terms of its course, stage length, forest sections and viewpoint. Stage length and landscape features can be compared separately: the number of kilometres describes the extent, while the forest and mountain saddle represent the features along the route.
Those wishing to combine cultural details with a landscape theme in Salmerón will find different points of connection: the church and Renaissance palace represent architectural history, while the springs are named destinations in the surrounding area. The Ruta de la Lana represents a stage with a fixed length; the Botarga represents an annual tradition. This comparison helps set the focus between the townscape, connection with nature, route and tradition. Within the hiking theme, the trail, forest and viewpoint also remain distinguishable as separate features.

Traditions
The Botarga de Salmerón takes place every year on the Saturday of Carnival. During the Botarga, the Mascaritas parade through the streets in traditional costumes and scatter confetti as a symbol of fertility. In the evening, the Mascaritas and Tío Alhiguí gather around a large bonfire in Salmerón’s Plaza Mayor, a triangular square lined with arcades, and eat the food collected during the day.
