Jabalera: Holiday Apartments, Culture and Nature

Jabalera is characterised by the most rugged and intricate reliefs in the entire comarca, with the Sierra de Altomira forming the landscape backdrop. In the Hoz de Jabalera, the cluse is considered one of the best examples of a cluse in Castilla-La Mancha. Access to the cluse leads from Jabalera along a 1.5 km westward-running track to the gorge, beside an old quarry and the ruins of a mill. There is some danger when approaching the edges of the gorge to view the cluse.

In Jabalera, nature, geology, a hiking route and architectural heritage stand alongside one another as distinct themes. The Hoz de Jabalera connects the area's landscape features with its geological relief, while the church and Rollo de Justicia provide their own architectural accents.

Nature

The Jabalera anticline is a denuded anticline whose central part has been eroded away, exposing older layers. The geological relief lies in the Hoz de Jabalera, about two kilometres from the town. Its folded rock consists of limestone.

In the regional surroundings of Jabalera, the Sierra de Altomira is protected under the Natura 2000 network in two ways: as a ZEC, Zona de Especial Conservación, and as a ZEPA, Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves.

Hiking

The circular route “Contrastes alcarreños en la Sierra de Altomira” is 6.7 km long and starts and ends in Jabalera's square. It leads into the “Sierra de Altomira” Natura 2000 protected zone, designated as both a ZEC and a ZEPA; this zone covers more than 20% of the municipal area.

For planning a day, this means that different scales come together: the cluse is connected by a 1.5 km track, the circular route measures 6.7 km, and the church and Rollo concentrate several cultural details in the town.

Culture

The parish church of Santa María la Mayor in Jabalera was built in the 15th century and expanded with significant architectural elements in the 16th and 17th centuries. On its southern side is a porch with flattened arches on columns with round shafts and Doric capitals.

The sequence of construction phases connects the original church building with architectural elements added later. The interior of Santa María la Mayor has three naves. The central nave is covered by a lunette vault; the central vault contains a quatrefoil-shaped medallion made of red jasper.

The Rollo de Justicia stands on a square plinth with three steps and is topped by a metal cross. On the square opposite the church, it is an important civic feature because of its rarity in the region.
