Palomares del Campo: Church, Festivals and Landscape

Palomares del Campo places the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción at the centre: its construction began in 1553 under the master stonemason Cristóbal de Oñate, the façade was completed in 1638 and designed by Francisco de Anchea.

Culture

The church has three naves, each with four bays separated by groin vaults. The church contains notable works of sculpture, painting and architecture from the 16th to the 18th century. Also included are the images of Santo Cristo de la Paz and the Virgen de la Cabeza, the town’s patron saints.

By 1597, authorisation had been granted for Mass to be celebrated in the church. The Museum of Sacred Art, the Parish Museum of Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción, is open to the public. In this way, the town combines a sacred space with historical exhibits and furnishings developed over centuries.

To this day, Palomares del Campo preserves traditional masonry houses and plain façades typical of the Alcarria. The town’s historical traces also include visible remains of a tower and a hermitage. The watchtower known as the “Castillo de San Miguel” is documented in connection with the Almoravid period.

The HPC 5 mining complex comprises more than 150 shafts or mines. The HPC 5 mine (Huete-Palomares del Campo) is regarded as the largest mineral extraction site in the entire empire. Thus, alongside ecclesiastical art, architectural forms, military traces and mining history emerge as distinct themes.

Festivals

The festival in honour of the Virgen de la Cabeza has been celebrated on the last Sunday in April since 1614. Dancers, Gitanillas and Tunos perform at it; paloteo dances are also presented.

In the programme for the patron saint’s festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Cabeza, held from 25 to 28 April 2026, a bonfire at the hermitage was scheduled for 11 p.m. The festival in honour of Santo Cristo de la Paz takes place on the last weekend of September; bullfighting events are held on Saturday and Sunday as part of this festival.

The festival dates and the different components of the celebrations establish a clear seasonal focus alongside the historical sites that are visible year-round. Architecture and art, festival traditions, mining history and landscape therefore stand alongside one another as distinct themes for planning day trips.

Landscape

Palomares del Campo is located in the Alcarria conquense, a landscape of gentle hills and dry-farmed fields. The landscape around Fuente del Pez includes the Fuente del Pez ford.

The rural paths in the municipality are suitable for easy hikes and walks between cultivated fields. They complement the cultural impressions with a quiet, agriculturally characterised side of the municipality, while the Alcarria, with its hills and fields, provides the landscape setting.
