Cañada del Hoyo: Lagoons, Hiking Trails and Cultural Sites

The Lagunas de Cañada del Hoyo natural monument comprises seven karst lagoons with water all year round. For planning purposes, trail type, estimated duration, history and accessibility can be considered as different points of reference.

Hiking

The PR-CU 83 Sendero de las Lagunas begins in Cañada del Hoyo, leads to Laguna del Tejo and follows the same route back to the village. It is a linear route, 4 kilometres long, has a low level of difficulty and takes an estimated one to two hours. The PR-CU 83 offers rest areas, interpretation areas, lagoons, panoramic views and geological points of interest. A hiking trail accessible to everyone leads to the most important lagoons of the natural monument, including Laguna del Tejo, the deepest lagoon at 32 metres. The different routes and estimated durations provide points of comparison for planning your day.

The PR-CU 88 begins at Castillo del Buen Suceso and follows the Camino de la Virgen; after joining the PR-CU 87, the route leads back to Cañada del Hoyo. The PR-CU 87 hiking trail crosses the preserved Puente Molina bridge, with its Romanesque arch, on the former medieval route "camino real de Las Zomas a Cañada del Hoyo".

Nature

The first three lagoons of the natural monument are freely accessible; the others are located on the “7 leguas” estate. The Ermita de la Virgen de los Ángeles is set in a scenic environment approximately 5 kilometres from Cañada del Hoyo. The grounds surrounding the privately owned Castillo del Buen Suceso are freely accessible. Rural paths lead uphill from Cañada del Hoyo; the final section is completed on foot. Parts of the wall, the keep and the former castle courtyard have been preserved at the castle.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves and the Ermita del Hoyo are considered examples of the vernacular architecture of the Serranía.

The Centro Expositivo de Cañada del Hoyo is currently closed. It explains the formation of the Las Hoyas site and presents the habitat of its predator.

Kárstica Espacio de Creación began operating in 2019 as a space for contemporary art in the rural surroundings of Cañada del Hoyo, Cuenca, and is located in the former Cañada del Hoyo railway station.
