Pedro Muñoz – Lagoons, Culture and Traditions

Pedro Muñoz combines landscapes, customs and cultural history. The Ronda del Mayo Manchego was recognised as an intangible Bien de Interés Cultural in 2024. Culture

The Iglesia parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol is located on Plaza de España. The late Renaissance building was constructed between 1699 and 1718, and its tower was built in 1721. The Ermita de la Virgen del Buen Parto, also known as the Ermita de San Miguel, was built between 1690 and 1695.

The Quixote Box houses the Zunzunegui Cervantine collection, comprising 845 items, including books and various objects related to Don Quixote and Miguel de Cervantes. The collection includes editions in more than 30 languages. The Antigua Fábrica de Harinas offers another insight into local history: it preserves the complete, exceptionally well-preserved factory machinery, including machines from 1860. The Yacimiento arqueológico del Cerro de las Nieves archaeological site preserves the remains of Pedro Muñoz’s earliest inhabitants from late prehistory, particularly from the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Nature

The Complejo Lagunar de Pedro Muñoz is designated as a biosphere reserve and a Special Protection Area for birds. The area features unique plant communities in saline habitats and one of the best waterbird communities in La Mancha Húmeda. The Complejo Lagunar de Pedro Muñoz has observation posts for studying and observing birdlife.

The CM-3103 begins in Pedro Muñoz and connects several of the lagoons. Landscape orientation and birdwatching are combined with different routes and access points, without every route necessarily having the same character.

Trails and Observation

The Centro de Interpretación El Humedal de Don Quijote uses interactive panels and videos and offers guided visits with the opportunity to observe wild birds. The Senda de la Laguna del Pueblo is a circular route to and from the Centro de Interpretación, with viewpoints for observing wetland birds.

The Ruta de la Malvasía follows the shore of Laguna del Pueblo for approximately 3 km. The trail in the San Miguel area runs along the Záncara River and is suitable for hikers and cyclists. Different types of trails, observation points and activities can be compared when planning your own day.
