Bolaños de Calatrava – Volcanic Landscapes, Culture and Regional Traditions

In Bolaños de Calatrava, Casa de Coca is the only surviving noble residence, dates from the late 18th century and was built entirely in the Baroque style. Casa de Coca also preserves a restored wrought-iron grille from the 19th century; above the lintel is the family coat of arms, made of marble. Culture and History

The Casas de la calle Cristo form a group of four houses with shared architectural features that may date from the 16th century. Their architectural features are Mudéjar; they are considered the oldest residential buildings in Bolaños de Calatrava.

The walls of the Ermita del Santo Cristo de la Columna are decorated with Gothic paintings. Inside, there are frescoes as well as a Baroque altarpiece created by Miguel de Oliveros in 1689. The Ermita has a single-nave layout and a floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross. It is designated as open to visitors and is open during Mass times.

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Felipe y Santiago is a temple built in the 16th century that combines Renaissance and Gothic styles.

The Castillo de Doña Berengüela is an Arab fortress with a square floor plan and a keep five storeys high. It currently serves as a museum and has panels with QR codes for an audio guide in Spanish and English.

The Casino de la Verja is a Neo-Mudéjar building constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. Initially, it housed the Círculo Agrario e Industrial de Bolaños; later, it became the headquarters of other associations and a venue for cultural events.

Landscapes and Trails

Bolaños de Calatrava belongs to Campo de Calatrava, one of the most distinctive volcanic regions of the Iberian Peninsula. Gentle hills, eroded craters, vineyards and cereal fields shape a landscape of great geological and ecological value there.

The Ruta de los santuarios begins next to the Santuario de la Virgen del Monte; the Virgen del Monte is the patron saint of Bolaños de Calatrava. The 15.8 km route is a there-and-back trail through olive groves and agricultural fields. For personal planning, the cultural sites and the trail can be considered as different daily rhythms.

Faith and Regional Tradition

The Santuario Virgen del Monte consists of two hermitages dedicated to the Virgen del Monte: an older chapel dating from around the 13th century and the present-day temple from the early 20th century. It houses a collection of votive offerings and furnishings belonging to the Virgen del Monte.

The Semana Santa of Bolaños de Calatrava forms part of the Ruta de la Pasión Calatrava, which has been recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional.

Bolaños de Calatrava belongs to the protected geographical indication IGP Berenjenas de Almagro. During the festivities at the Santuario Virgen del Monte, dishes are known as Caldereta de cordero, Revientalobos and Chuletas de cordero.
