Vioño: Vacation Rentals, Río Pas and Cultural Heritage

Vioño brings together the themes of river landscapes and cultural heritage. The Río Pas reaches the town from the south, turns east and borders the town center. In doing so, it separates it from Renedo, Quijano and Barcenilla. The Río Pas corridor near Vioño features permanent riverside vegetation consisting of poplars, alders and willows. The polycentric settlement structure comprises small villages, traditional terraced houses and detached stately homes.

Geographical Location

Vioño can be reached from the A-8 between Oviedo and Bilbao via exit 225 and the CA-234. From the exit, it is approximately 2 kilometers to the town.

Culture

The Santuario de la Virgen de Valencia is protected as a Bien de Interés Local and is a pilgrimage sanctuary on a hill in the Barrio de Valencia in Vioño. The first building dates from 1622. The Santuario houses the Virgen de Valencia, a Gothic sculpture from the mid-15th century.

The Iglesia de San Pedro in Vioño dates from the 17th to the 18th century. Its rectangular floor plan comprises a single nave. The Iglesia de San Vicente is a simple single-nave church from the 17th century. Its altarpiece is based on pre-Churrigueresque models from the Camargo workshop dating from the final years of the 17th century and preserves its original sculptures, with the exception of the depiction of Saint Joseph.

The Centro de Interpretación del Valle de Piélagos is located in Vioño’s former first school building next to the Santuario de la Virgen de Valencia. It addresses the Paleolithic rock art remains in Piélagos, including the outstanding example of the Cueva de Santián. By prior arrangement, the Centro offers educational and explanatory guided tours for individuals, associations, groups and other organizations.

Hiking

The municipal route La Virgen de Valencia is a moderately difficult 6.1-kilometer hike with an estimated duration of two hours. It begins at the Complejo municipal Vimenor and ends at the Iglesia de San Salvador in the Barrio de Salcedo; in total, it passes ten points of interest. The route length and stated duration make it easier to assess the planned scope.

Another route through Vioño by Pasa x Piélagos combines nature and history. It particularly highlights the Virgen de Valencia, known as “La Quemada,” the patron saint of the municipality of Piélagos.

Visit and Feast Day

The festivals in Vioño include the Virgen de Valencia on September 8. This date is associated with the patron saint of the municipality of Piélagos. The Centro de Interpretación del Valle de Piélagos should be open on Fridays from April 10 to September 8.
