From Perrozo, there is a panoramic view of the eastern massif of the Picos de Europa. Two very old olive trees stand beside the entrance to the church in Perrozo.

Nature and hiking

The PR-S XX “Entre Perrozo y Lerones” hiking trail begins and ends in Perrozo and runs entirely through a Site of Community Importance (SCI). It consists of approximately 3.3 km of cart track, 8.1 km of track and 1.1 km of road. As a circular route, PR-S XX is 12.5 km long; the walking time is 4 hours and 40 minutes in both directions. Another hike leads linearly from Lerones to Perrozo through holm oak and oak stands and ends at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. The information on route type, surface, total length and walking time allows you to make an objective comparison of the two hikes.

Village and access

Perrozo lies on the left bank of the Lamedo River, a tributary of the Bullón. Perrozo can be reached via the CA-871, which branches off from the CA-184 road between Ojedo and Piedrasluengas opposite Piasca. Old bread ovens can be found in the village as visible traditional architectural elements. They may be hemispherical or square, made of stone and brick, and sometimes also of clay, and may be attached to the main building.

Culture and history

The Church of the Assumption in Perrozo has Romanesque origins dating back to the late 12th or early 13th century. Its entrance portal is Romanesque and framed by an alfiz with a pointed arch; the decorated archivolts and capitals bear unusual figures. Above the southern door is a round stone grille with a carved border, an S-shaped stem with an ivy leaf and an openwork rosette with six or seven petals. The grille located in Perrozo is a plaster copy; the original is said to be kept in the Diocesan Museum of Santillana. The church also contains a hemispherical Romanesque baptismal font with a diameter of 81 cm and a height of 73 cm, in each case excluding the base.

The former monastery of Santa María de Perrozo has been documented since the 11th century and stood where the parish church is located today. In 1030, Munio Alfonso, Count of Liébana, donated the monastery of Santa María and Santiago de Perrozo to Abbess Fronilde of Piasca. La Torre de Perrozo is a former manor house dating from the 18th century. It was completely restored in 1998; its traditional Lebaniego architecture, characterised by the use of stone and oak wood, has been preserved.
