Holiday apartment in Peñacastillo, Santander – Nature, Trails and Culture
Peñacastillo, Santander is synonymous with a journey through nature, trails and history. Rivers, forests, wildlife, cultural heritage and archaeological traces offer a range of different thematic perspectives.
Nature
In the upper reaches of the Calera River, good conservation status and good water quality come together. A natural forest accompanies the river, with the alder stands being particularly noteworthy. In the area surrounding the Calera River corridor, you can observe red kites, common buzzards and griffon vultures. The watercourse, forest and birdlife thus form a closely connected landscape, without the individual features losing their own distinctiveness.
Trails
The hiking route to Cascada el Chorretón is 1.3 km long and is listed as taking 30 minutes to walk. It can be walked at any time of year. There is also a hiking and trekking map of the Montes de Ordunte at a scale of 1:40,000.
Another trail connection is called “Valnera - Cotobasero - La Calera del Prado” and connects Valnera, Cotobasero and La Calera del Prado. The final section to the Cotobasero geodetic point is covered on foot through a gate bearing the inscription “COTOBASERO”. When approaching from Lanestosa towards La Calera del Prado, the N-629 initially passes Valnera. On this approach, Valnera is 3 km before La Calera del Prado.
Culture
The Museo Antigua Fábrica de Dolomitas was protected by the Basque Government in 2002 as a cultural asset in the Monument category and reopened as a museum. It preserves restored industrial heritage and conveys the mining history of the Carranza Valley.
Karpin Abentura includes educational exhibition spaces and the Gastornisland enclosure. Animals from the period after the extinction of the dinosaurs are gathered there, including a mammoth, a cave bear cub and a sabre-toothed tiger.
History
The Haizko tombs are also among the historical traces of this area. They date from the Neolithic and the Eneolithic.
Accommodation
When comparing holiday apartments in Peñacastillo, Santander, check the exact location, accommodation type, possible occupancy, included services, price components, and booking and cancellation conditions on the respective listing pages. Reviewing these points provides a clear basis for your own decision. Use the specific information for each individual listing and compare only what is actually stated there. Depending on the stay you want, you can place the relevant conditions side by side without assuming additional features. It is also worth checking whether arrival and departure rules, deadlines for changes and any additional costs are listed separately on the listing page.
