Mazandrero: Megaliths, Forests and Trails
The megalithic monuments of Los Lagos are located in Mazandrero. The Los Lagos megalithic complex consists of three megalithic burial chambers called Los Lagos I, Los Lagos II and Los Lagos III. At the end of the 1990s, the Los Lagos A menhir was erected as part of archaeological interventions in this complex. The Los Lagos B menhir is an object of cultural heritage in the Los Lagos area of Mazandrero.
Culture
The townscape also combines various historical periods. The Casona de los Martínez in Mazandrero is a manor house dating from the 17th century. The Palacio de los Obeso on Plaza de los Leones was built at the beginning of the 20th century in the regionalist Montañes style. In the centre of Mazandrero, a large number of Baroque manor houses preserve the historic building stock.
The 17th-century Church of San Lorenzo has a simple bell tower and a semicircular-arched portal with coffered archivolts. Its main altarpiece dates from the late 17th century and is the work of the artist Juan de la Peña, who came from Trasmiera. The side altarpieces date from the 18th century and display the work of the Campurrian draughtsman Manuel García Bayllo.
The hundred-year-old Fuente de Los Leones in Mazandrero has been restored; its original architecture and the original materials from 1911 have been completely preserved. The San Lorenzo festival is celebrated in Mazandrero on 10 August with traditional processions, a romería and a verbena.
Nature
Mazandrero is situated on a hilltop with good panoramic views of La Joyanca. The landscape includes distinctive riverside vegetation as well as well-preserved oak, beech and birch forests. Mazandrero is also located in a brown bear protection zone.
From the Camino de la Guerra, clear remains of former glaciers can be seen in the Cuenca Bucer and Cuenca Vitores valleys. The geological traces and the forest landscape create different accents within the natural area.
Trails
For cyclists, the Mazandrero–Gulatrapa–Los Lagos MTB route follows a 12-kilometre climb that runs partly through the forest areas of Alto Híjar. From the Plaza de la Fuente in Mazandrero, a track leads towards Gulatrapa and Los Lagos through the wooded, shaded slopes of Monte Milagro. A second track climbs southwards from the Plaza de la Fuente towards the Camino de la Guerra.
The Hermandad de Campoo de Suso municipality also has the PR-S83 hiking trail, “Camino de los Balcones del Oso”. A 455-metre-long and 3.5-metre-wide section of the rural road between Mazandrero and Los Lagos was repaired with an investment of 39,983 euros. The different trail lengths and types offer you various planning scales for active days; the specific choice can be based on the route, direction and landscape theme.
