La Concha is characterised by traces of culture, a water landscape and trails along the route of a former railway line. The Puente de Solía is particularly striking: in 2003, it was included as a Bien Inventariado in the Inventario General del Patrimonio Cultural de Cantabria. In earlier times, it was a vital connection between the eastern coast, Santander and the Camino de Castilla.

Culture and history

The parish church dedicated to San Pedro Advíncula is part of La Concha’s cultural character. The church of La Concha is considered Baroque. Its surroundings, together with the bolera, were redesigned and prepared for residents and tourists. Another historical trace can be found in the Mies de Solía: a medieval necropolis dating from the 9th to the 12th century is located there in La Concha.

The Finca de Riosequillo is also located in La Concha de Villaescusa. Its main building has a rectangular floor plan and three storeys; the top storey was intended for attic rooms. The main façade features a round arch and a coat of arms. The finca also includes a beautiful collection of trees. Some of these trees are listed in the Catálogo de árboles singulares de Cantabria.

Landscape

The Puente de Solía stands above the Ría de Solía in an extensive marshland area and on land that can be flooded during high tide. The Camino Natural Vía Verde del Pas also passes through the surroundings of La Concha: it crosses the road from La Concha and runs through cornfields and pastureland.

Walking and cycling trails

The Senda Verde del Pas and the Carril Minero de Obregón use the route of the former, now vanished Astillero–Ontaneda railway line. The Senda Verde del Pas is approximately 8 km long. Both trails are suitable for pedestrians and cyclists, allowing the different routes and types of movement to be compared. The approximate length of the Senda Verde provides a tangible measure for planning the day. Together with the shared use by pedestrians and cyclists, this creates a clear comparison between different ways of travelling along the old railway route. The landscape, trail features and the preserved railway station building each add their own distinctive accents.
