Discover Ibio: Churches, History and Holiday Apartments

Ibio can be explored through its historic architectural forms, rural traditions and connections to the landscape. Culture

The Iglesia de San Pedro y San Juan was built in 1771 and preserves an 18th-century main altarpiece.

The side façades of the Torre de los Guerra feature round-arched loophole windows, embrasures and side gables crowned with battlements.

The Casona de los Guerra was built in the 15th century at the behest of Juan Gutiérrez de la Vega. It may have been constructed on the site of a defensive tower dating from 1285.

The bell tower known as “Iglesona” belonged to the former church of San Pedro y San Felices, whose existence has been documented since the middle of the 9th century, and has a square ground plan with four storeys.

Ibio’s cemetery is located in the rural village centre near the old church and follows the medieval burial model of burying people beside the church. Its entrance portal is made of dressed stone in the Neoclassical style and has a round arch.

The Baila de Ibio is listed as Ibio’s intangible cultural heritage. As a dance form of Celtic origin, it is traditionally performed by young men and women from the village.

Landscape

The Yeguada Militar de Cría Caballar de Ibio is now an authorised centre for horse breeding and reproduction, with stallions of various breeds. On the grounds of the Yeguada de Ibio, the meadows are used to keep livestock free-range.

Monte Ibio lies in the immediate vicinity of Ibio. Its highest point reaches 798 metres, and it is regarded as one of the comarca’s most significant landscape landmarks.

A humilladero on the road between Herrera de Ibio and Ibio served hikers and travellers as a landmark, as well as a place to stop and spend a moment in quiet reflection.

Local life and other destinations

The San Pantaleón festival takes place in Ibio on 28 July. The Feria de la Inmaculada is held there on 6 December.
