Cosgaya between the Reconquista Trail, forests and history

Cosgaya is the endpoint of the 58.6-kilometre-long GR-PNPE 202 Ruta de la Reconquista, which leads from Covadonga to Cosgaya. It is classified as demanding and must be divided into at least three stages. Along its route are meadows, forests, high mountain passes and deep gorges. The number of stages and the level of difficulty help you assess the scope of such a hike at an early stage. The routes mentioned differ not only in length: the Reconquista connects several types of landscape and requires stage planning, while the short path along the Deva is on a different scale. Forest routes, riverbanks, passes and gorges therefore represent different trail settings alongside one another; the directions towards Pembes, Pido and Puerto de San Glorio also mark different destinations.

Hiking

The Peña Oviedo route begins in Areños, a district of Cosgaya. From there, it leads through a Pyrenean oak forest, reaches the Collado del Campo la Santa and continues towards Pembes. The path to the waterfall of the Vejo Caves, on the other hand, is half a kilometre long and runs along the Deva River. A footpath has also been created in Cosgaya to make access easier to the viewpoint at the waterfall of the Vejo Caves and to a picnic area.

Nature

On the Pista de Pierga, the PR-PNPE 26 Ruta Hayedo de las Ilces runs towards Cosgaya along the right bank of the Deva River. It follows the base of the dense forests that descend from the peaks of Coriscao. Several agricultural tracks lead from Cosgaya on excursions through beech and oak forests. One of these tracks climbs to the Collado de Llesba near Puerto de San Glorio; another leads from Cosgaya through the forest towards Pido. History

Cosgaya honours Don Pelayo with a statue. The Asturian king Fávila, Don Pelayo's son, is said to have been killed by a bear in Cosgaya at Monte La Calavera. Documents from the year 795 mention the double monastery of Santa María de Causegadia in Cosgaya.

Geographical context

On the CA-185, Cosgaya is marked at kilometre 13+200 in the direction of Fuente Dé on the route from Potes to Fuente Dé. The Camino Vadiniense leads uphill from Cosgaya to Puerto del Cubo.

It was proposed to connect the path to the waterfall of the Vejo Caves with Cosgaya and use it as a safe alternative to the road section of the Camino Vadiniense.
