Discover Carrejo: Mill, Museum and Nature

Carrejo is home to the Museo de la Naturaleza de Cantabria. It is housed in the Casona de Carrejo, which probably dates back to the 18th century and has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural since December 1984. The museum is located in an area of great natural and scenic value. It presents the various landscapes and ecosystems of Cantabria in an informative and educational way.

Culture

Numerous well-preserved traditional houses and palaces can be visited on a walk through the streets. The Palacio de Igareda y Balbás in Carrejo has a portal with attached pilasters, a large coat of arms, five round arches on prismatic pillars and a large balcony in the form of a solana. The Ermita-Humilladero del Angel in Carrejo contains a folk-style altarpiece. The Ermita del Ángel is a restored square chapel from the 18th century, built of rubble masonry and ashlar stone.

El Molino in Carrejo is a historically significant ethnographic building. The Molino de Carrejo is a hydraulic grain mill dating from the 18th century, historically used to grind maize and other grains. Its milling technology and working equipment have been preserved, including two mill wheels, hoppers, drawers for collecting the ground flour and other utensils. The Molino de Carrejo was added to the Inventario General del Patrimonio de Cantabria in 2002.

In the municipality’s Easter programme for 2026, the Molino de Carrejo was listed as a cultural venue; it was noted as being open to visitors on Friday. Appointments and times must be booked in advance for guided tours of the Museo de la Naturaleza de Cantabria. The museum has a lift and facilities for people with reduced mobility.

At the end of June, Carrejo and Santibáñez celebrate the San Pedro festival with a procession in honour of the saint and a Baile de Picayos. The Fiesta de la Patata takes place in Carrejo on the last Friday in August and includes a tortilla competition, followed by the burning of the “Patatu”.

Routes

Carrejo can be reached on foot or by bicycle from Cabezón, Santibáñez, Vernejo and Ontoria. A wooden footbridge on the Senda del Minchón crosses the river and connects the municipalities of Cabezón de la Sal and Mazcuerras.

Nature

Along the Senda del Minchón, hay meadows grazed by cattle alternate with vegetable gardens and plots of land with fruit trees; the Sierra del Escudo de Cabuérniga can be seen in the background. Grey herons (Ardea cinerea) and mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) are frequently observed along this section of the Senda del Minchón.
