Culture and History

The Braña de los Pastores comprises three sites with exposed sandstone outcrops and is considered one of the most important examples of schematic rock engravings in Cantabria. The Braña de los Pastores complex comprises five sandstone outcrops; compared with the three sites, it has the greatest number and variety of engravings. The Conjunto de Cabrojo comprises schematic rock art dating from the period after the Palaeolithic.

The Ermita de Las Nieves was built in the late 17th or early 18th century, rebuilt in 1725 and restored in 1998. A Casona in Cabrojo dates from the first half of the 18th century. The Feast of the Virgen de las Nieves is associated with a public pilgrimage on 5 August.

Landscape

Cabrojo lies in a low-lying, flat vega, bounded to the south and east by the River Saja and to the north and west by the foothills of the mountains. The Ermita de Las Nieves stands in a meadow in a natural setting away from populated centres. From Cabrojo, you can take the Ruta de Las Nieves; it leads to the Ermita de Las Nieves at an altitude of 240 metres and offers views across the Valle de Cabezón.
