Valle de San Lorenzo: Roque de Vento and Canarian Cultural Heritage

Roque de Vento stands in Valle de San Lorenzo, a salic rock or volcanic cone and a unique geomorphological and landscape feature. In Valle de San Lorenzo, or Valle del Ahijadero, it occupies a central and dominant position. Roque de Vento in the municipality of Arona on the island of Tenerife is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Archaeological Zone.

Culture

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Lorenzo in Valle San Lorenzo is the subject of a comprehensive municipal restoration project that respects its historical and heritage value. The Iglesia del San Lorenzo houses depictions of the patron saint and the Virgen de la Encarnación, which are dated to the 17th century based on their characteristics. The Sitio de la Fuente is considered to be the original site of the Ermita de San Lorenzo Mártir. The La Fuente ensemble in Valle de San Lorenzo preserves examples of traditional settlement and construction methods.

Arona ArqueoViva uses a playful exploration system to enable participants to discover Arona's archaeological heritage. The permanent open-air sculpture exhibition Piques y Rosetas, opened on 9 May 2026, pays tribute to traditional crafts associated with textile work and their significance for the cultural heritage of Arona and Valle San Lorenzo.

Festivals

The pilgrimage in honour of Our Lady of Fátima in Valle San Lorenzo is the oldest in the municipality of Arona and one of the town's most deeply rooted religious and festive events; its tradition dates back to 1957. It starts at 11:15 a.m. at the Parroquia de San Lorenzo Mártir, follows Avenida San Lorenzo and the TF-28 to the Mirador de La Centinela, and includes a floral offering there as well as the traditional blessing for the municipality and its residents. As part of the celebrations, a Baile de Magos with performances by various municipal and invited folklore groups takes place at 8:00 p.m. in Plaza San Lorenzo.

The 2026 edition of Ahijadero Cultural takes place from 4 to 10 May at the Centro Cultural del Valle San Lorenzo and at various locations in the surrounding area. Activities relating to crafts, history, music and nature convey Canarian cultural heritage.

Food and Drink

The Mercado del Agricultor at Calle Cooperativa 2 in Valle San Lorenzo offers a wide selection of seasonal fruit and vegetables. In April, May and June 2026, its programme included free workshops and tastings featuring local products or products from short supply chains; the activities were aimed at people of all ages.

Trails

The route through the Barranco de Chija starts in Valle San Lorenzo via the access to the La Tosca neighbourhood. It leads through the rugged ravine bed to the gallery of Salto del Chopo and then returns to Valle San Lorenzo; the route is 3 km long. In the 2026 hiking programme of the Aula de la Naturaleza, another route led from Cho Pancho via Camino La Silleta, El Roque, Fuente Tamaide, La Hoya, Las Cruces and Montaña Las Tabaibas to Valle San Lorenzo. Different route options and trail lengths can be compared separately for personal planning.
