Palm Mar – Volcanic Landscape, Archaeology and Coast

Palm Mar – the area between Malpaís de Rasca and the Palm-Mar settlement is of exceptional cultural and heritage value.

Nature

Malpaís de Rasca is designated as a Special Nature Reserve. Volcanic lava flows define the area and have created a rugged Malpaís landscape. Among the volcanic cones of Malpaís de Rasca, Montaña Grande stands out in particular.

Culture

Malpaís de Rasca contains numerous archaeological remains from the time of the indigenous people. These include remains of huts and shell middens, lithic material, pottery fragments and other structures associated with indigenous settlement. Arona ArqueoViva invites visitors to become archaeologists for a day in a real-life setting. The nearby Faro de Rasca dates from 1898.

Water

On the Paseo Palm-Mar, Playa La Arenita is one of Palm-Mar’s visitor attractions. Palm-Mar Bay (El Bufadero), also known as Playa La Arenita, is recommended in the south of Tenerife as one of the best places for snorkelling and swimming with turtles. Guided kayaking and snorkelling excursions start at Playa La Arenita in Palm-Mar. The dive site at Faro de Rasca can be reached by boat from the nearby port of Las Galletas. There are underwater ravines in front of Faro de Rasca that were formed by lava flows.

Getting Around

A hiking route through Malpaís de Rasca begins in El Fraile and runs for 3 km to the lighthouse. From Los Cristianos, there is a route of low difficulty and a length of 3.53 km. The different route lengths and the stated difficulty level help you compare the two hiking details for your own planning. The route from El Fraile gives the distance in whole kilometres, while the information for the route from Los Cristianos also specifies the difficulty level. The two descriptions therefore differ not only in their starting points, but also in how they provide orientation: in one case, the distance is the focus; in the other, both the distance and difficulty are highlighted. The main access to Malpaís de Rasca is via the TF-6225 road, which leads to Palm-Mar. TITSA route 468 connects Palm-Mar with Parque La Reina, Guaza, El Fraile, Las Galletas, Costa del Silencio and Guargacho.

A public plaza has been opened directly on Palm-Mar beach, featuring landscaped areas and quiet areas. It expands the spaces for residents and visitors to spend time and meet, and improves the pedestrian connection to the seafront promenade.
