Taganana is a scattered settlement in the Parque Rural de Anaga.
Culture
Taganana’s cultural history includes the church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves. It is protected as a cultural asset of special value (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the Monument category; its origins date back to the 16th century.
The church has a rectangular floor plan with three naves. Inside is the 16th-century Flemish triptych “Adoration of the Magi” by Marcellus Coffermans.
On Taganana’s square stands the chapel of Santa Catalina, opposite the parish church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves; it was consecrated on 29 May 1630.
Another cultural reference is the Librea in Taganana. It reenacts a historical episode in which sentries spotted a foreign fleet and 85 residents formed a militia.
Palm weaving is recognised as a cultural practice in Taganana.
History
The Camino de Las Vueltas was laid out in 1506 along the course of an important pre-Hispanic route and strengthened the connections between Taganana and La Laguna.
Until recently, the historic Las Vueltas route was Taganana’s only transport connection with Santa Cruz and La Laguna.
A paved section of this route leads to the Portugal neighbourhood in Taganana, which is noted for its traditional house architecture.
For the PR TF 04 El Bailadero–Taganana hiking trail, the outward journey from La Laguna interchange station is linked to bus route 077, while the return journey from Taganana to Santa Cruz interchange station is linked to route 946.
Hiking
The PR-TF 8 Afur–Taganana–Afur circular hiking trail leads from Afur towards Tamadite Beach, climbs to the hamlet of Caserío del Chorro and on to Taganana, and returns to Afur via Monte de las Vueltas.
It is a moderately difficult circular trail covering 14.3 km, with a stated duration of approximately seven hours.
The hiking options in the Anaga massif include the Sendero Interpretado Taganana interpretive trail.
The different routes and the information on distance and duration help compare hiking options by length and available time.
Coast
Playa de Almáciga is one of Taganana’s three beaches. It has black volcanic sand and is suitable for surfing; the surf can be strong there all year round.
Playa de Benijo offers views of the Roques de Anaga.
