Los Carrizales – Gorge, Hiking Trails and Canarian Heritage

Nature and Water

The Barranco de Los Carrizales carries water almost continuously for much of the year. Canyoning in the Barranco de Los Carrizales in the Parque Rural de Teno requires a permit from the Cabildo; the jumps there are no more than 15 metres high. Getting Around

The hamlet of Los Carrizales can be reached via the TF-436 road and a road branching off to the left towards Los Carrizales. The hamlet of the same name can be visited in the upper section of the Barranco de Los Carrizales. The municipal route through Masca, the Valle de El Palmar, Teno Alto and Buenavista recommends the hamlet of Los Carrizales as a stop.

In Teno’s hiking trail network, the PR TF-51.1 Los Carrizales is listed as 2.2 km long. The moderately difficult hiking route from Los Carrizales to Roque de Abache is 5.2 km long and includes 300 metres of ascent. It follows an unmarked, partially exposed path along the ridge of Los Carrizales; from the summit, there are views of Los Gigantes and as far as Punta Teno. The different distances and the stated ascent help you assess the scope of a hike in advance.

Culture and History

The hamlet of Los Carrizales is considered an important ensemble of traditional Canarian heritage. Traditional homes in Los Carrizales include single-storey buildings made of stone, wood, bricks and local clay.

Traditional rural homes are associated with the hamlet of Los Carrizales; in the Macizo de Teno, single-storey houses predominate, alongside two-storey houses arranged in rows or L-shaped layouts.

On 24 June, a festival in honour of San Juanito was celebrated in the Los Carrizales neighbourhood, featuring a Mass and procession in accordance with local tradition. The festival included religious, cultural and celebratory events, including a communal paella, domino and Envite tournaments, and musical performances.

Local Products

Traditionally preserved local onion varieties are still grown today in the hamlet of Los Carrizales in Buenavista del Norte.
