Granadilla de Abona: Holiday Apartments Between Coast and Volcanic Landscapes

An unusually specific gateway to the history of Granadilla de Abona is the Secadero de Tabaco: José García Torres, one of the most important tobacco growers in the Abona region, built it in 1878, when tobacco cultivation developed as an alternative during the crisis in cochineal production. The Secadero is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of Ethnological Site.

Culture and History

The Museo de Historia de Granadilla de Abona is located in a traditional Canarian house dating from the late 19th century in the town's historic centre. Its chronologically arranged collections showcase the customs, activities and history of the municipality from the time of the Guanches to the present day. The museum has a total of eleven rooms, including one with reconstructions of various indigenous burial practices and grave goods.

The Cueva del Santo Hermano Pedro is a sanctuary dedicated to Saint Pedro de San José Betancur, the Santo Hermano Pedro. The Iglesia de San Antonio de Padua has a single-nave layout with a Latin-cross floor plan, as well as a Mudéjar coffered ceiling in the rafter-and-knot style with geometric decoration.

Landscape and Nature

Los Escurriales, also known as Paisaje Lunar, features white formations of volcanic pumice within the forest, shaped by wind and water erosion. The Los Derriscaderos Natural Monument is a 268-hectare geological landscape where erosion has created light-coloured volcanic landforms.

The Montañas de Ifara y Los Riscos Natural Monument consists of two well-preserved volcanic cones. Several bird species can be observed there; the area is also home to a longhorn beetle endemic to the region. Mount Guajara in Las Cañadas del Teide was home to the world's first astronomical mountain station.

Trails and Coast

The PR-TF 83 Altos de Granadilla is a 7.8-kilometre linear hiking trail from Cruz de Tea to Los Escurriales. Its route follows a branch of the former Camino Real de Chasna towards Los Escurriales. The PR-TF 83.1 begins in the hamlet of Las Vegas, passes through agricultural areas and pine forest, and runs along a lava flow towards Risco del Muerto.

The Camino Real del Sur between Granadilla and San Miguel is a historic route that can still be walked today and begins at Plaza González Mena in Granadilla de Abona. Different route options and landscape areas can be weighed against one another when planning an individual day trip.

Festivals and Local Life

The Romería Barquera de El Médano takes place at the end of September as part of the neighbourhood festivities. It includes a maritime procession during which the image of the Virgin is carried by boat from Playa Chica. Granadilla de Abona's most important romería takes place every year in June during the patron saint festivities.
