Discover Erjos: Charcas, hiking trails and rural culture

The Charcas de Erjos were formed by the accumulation of rainwater in clayey soil; a distinctive ecosystem with characteristic flora and fauna has developed within them.

Nature

Monte del Agua begins near the Charcas de Erjos and is home to Monteverde canario, vegetation typical of laurel forests, in the northwestern part of the island.

Birds associated with the water at the Charcas de Erjos include the grey heron (Ardea cinérea), the white wagtail or Canary white wagtail (Motacilla cinérea canariensis), the common snipe (Gallinago gallinago) and the Eurasian coot (Fulica atra).

Hiking and trails

The PR-TF 52 Erjos – Las Portelas (Monte del Agua) is an officially designated linear hiking trail of moderate difficulty, measuring 10.7 km. The route from Erjos to Las Portelas takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The trail initially passes through forested terrain, then runs along the eastern slopes of the Valle de El Palmar and reaches agricultural terraces.

The first section of the PR-TF 54 shares the trail at Monte del Agua for more than 4 km.

A second linear connection is the PR-TF 53 Los Silos – Cuevas Negras – Erjos, an officially designated hiking trail of moderate difficulty measuring 5.7 km. The route from Erjos to Los Silos takes approximately three hours.

The PR-TF 53 runs via C/ Las Cruces, initially follows the edge of the streambed area and then continues along the Barranco de El Salto towards Los Silos.

The PR-TF 52 runs through the Parque Rural de Teno; no permit is required. The different route lengths and time estimates for the two linear trails enable a clear comparison for planning your own day.

The SL-TF 151 runs along Calle La Unión to the Ermita de Erjos; this road forms the boundary between Los Silos and El Tanque.

Along the SL-TF 151 Ruigómez – Erjos – Ruigómez circular trail are numerous hidden threshing floors, bearing witness to the former importance of grain cultivation in this area.

Festivals in honour of Begoña take place in Erjos on the first weekend of June.

Festivals in honour of La Milagrosa take place in Erjos during the first week of October.
