Discover Chío: Culture, Trails and Volcanic Landscapes

The church and square form the centre of Chío’s historic old town. Around them stands architecture characteristic of traditional Canarian building styles.

Culture

Today’s Church of San Juan Bautista de Chío was built in 1960 to replace the chapel that had previously been demolished.

The first chapel in Chío was built as early as the 17th century. The Church of San Juan Bautista de Chío contains depictions of Our Lady of Peace and Saint John the Baptist.

In the Chío area, numerous indigenous archaeological sites with dwelling caves, pottery remains and wooden weapons bear witness to a history dating back to pre-Hispanic times.

Nature

The PR-TF 69 Chío–Vera de Erques hiking trail begins in Chío on Calle El Roquillo.

The SL-TF 201 Chío–Arguayo hiking trail begins near kilometre 28 of the TF-38 Chío–Boca Tauce road.

The SL-TF 203 Chío–Los Arenales hiking trail begins next to the Bodega Comarcal de Guía de Isora at kilometre 27+700 of the TF-38 Chío–Boca Tauce road in the town of Chío and ends at the Área Recreativa de Los Arenales.

Hiking and cycling are possible at the Área Recreativa de Chío. The recreational area has drinking water, toilets, fire pits, benches, picnic tables and a children’s area.

The trails in the Chío recreational area lead into the municipality’s volcanically shaped landscapes. Between Chío and Chirche lies Malpaís, a landscape area open to visitors.

From the Área Recreativa de Chío, you can see Pico Viejo, Teide, Montaña Reventada and Montaña Sámara.

The Área Recreativa de Chío is located in a forested area with open, well-developed Canarian pine forest.

The Área Recreativa de Chío can be reached via the TF-38 road towards Teide National Park. There is no public transport in the recreational area.

Festivals

The San Juan and Nuestra Señora de la Paz celebrations are scheduled to take place on Plaza de Chío on the weekend closest to 24 June.

San Antonio Abad is scheduled to take place on Plaza de Chío on the third Sunday in January.

The Carros de Chío event traditionally takes place every year on 29 November for the feast of Saint Andrew.

According to oral tradition, Carros de Chío has a history spanning more than 100 years.

At gastronomic events, restaurants from the municipality and wineries from across the island come together.
