Las Breñas: Trails, Culture and Canarian Townscape

The Camino Natural de Lanzarote (GR-131) runs through Las Breñas and forms part of a 71-kilometre route divided into five stages. The Yaiza–Playa Blanca stage leads to Las Breñas and includes a section of more than 1,500 metres that runs alongside a road. The Camino Natural is suitable for hiking, and a very large part of its route can be travelled by bicycle. From Las Breñas, the Camino Natural leads to Poblado del Terminillo, where numerous archaeological remains have been found, including rock inscriptions and precisely engraved stones.

Trails and Landscape

Las Breñas is a mountain village located at about 150 metres above sea level, on the foothills of Los Ajaches. With its white houses of no more than two storeys, Las Breñas is considered an example of Canarian architecture. Las Breñas has trails for short and long walks. A walk through Las Breñas conveys an impression of the harmonious urban landscape of the village. Mountain biking is one of the sports practised in Las Breñas.

The Salinas de Janubio are located near Las Breñas. At the Janubio salt pans, salt production is now the only remaining activity.

Culture

The Encuentro Folklórico Víctor Fernández Gopar takes place in Las Breñas every year and commemorates Víctor Fernández Gopar, known as “El Salinero”, as a master of composing verses and of the traditional construction and management of salt pans. A sculpture was unveiled in Las Breñas honouring the life and work of Víctor Fernández Gopar, known as “El Salinero”. The sculpture weighs 90 kilograms and is 2.40 metres high. A replica of the “El Salinero” sculpture stands in the square of his hometown.

The Parranda Janubio was founded in 1986 on the initiative of local residents at the Las Breñas teleclub; its repertoire consists predominantly of traditional Canarian music. Las Breñas celebrates festivities in honour of its patron saint, San Luis Gonzaga; the main day is 21 June. The festival week includes Canarian stalls and markets.

Transport

Intercity buses from Arrecife to Playa Blanca pass through Las Breñas. Route 6 runs along the Arrecife–Puerto del Carmen–Playa Blanca route.
