Cabo Verde: Palm Groves, Agriculture and Ravines

Agriculture remains the defining feature of Cabo Verde’s landscape. The Palmeral del Cruce de Cabo Verde-Los Dragos is an emblematic site of Gran Canaria and covers just over two hectares.

Nature and Landscape

The Palmeral del Cruce de Cabo Verde-Los Dragos lies within the Reserva Natural Especial de los Tiles Special Nature Reserve. This reserve covers an area of 91.5 hectares in the municipalities of Guía and Moya and encompasses one of the last remnants of laurel forest. Despite its limited extent, the remaining laurel forest makes a significant contribution to soil protection and groundwater recharge.

In the Palmeral de Cabo Verde, the Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis) is the predominant species. Date palms (Phoenix dactylifera) are found there almost exclusively in the lower section of the Barranco del Salado. The Palmeral de Cabo Verde extends across alluvial terraces and colluvial deposits along the Barranco del Salado and the ravines of La Cañada, Moreto and Los Dragos.

Culture

In the 1960s and 1970s, the north coast, the Costa de Lairaga and the basalt plateaus close to the coast, including Cabo Verde–La Cordillera, were almost entirely covered with productive banana plantations. The agricultural infrastructure in Cabo Verde is of ethnographic value.

Near Cabo Verde, the archaeological site of La Montañeta was designated a “Bien de Interés Cultural” by the Government of the Canary Islands under Decree 14/2009.

Cycling

The road through Cabo Verde to Moya is narrow and winding. The GC-752 offers a seven-kilometre winding descent through Cabo Verde from Moya to the sea. The descent on the GC-752 offers views of the Atlantic Ocean, the north coast and the town on the horizon. For the cycling tour, the route via Cabo Verde rather than via Los Dragos is recommended in order to avoid heavy traffic. Hiking and Trails

Near Cabo Verde, the GC-752 leads directly from Moya town centre to the district of Trujillo and provides fairly easy access to the archaeological site of La Montañeta. The Moya–Presa del Calabozo–Guía hiking route is rated easy according to the MIDE system. It is approximately 10 kilometres long and is estimated to take 3 hours and 20 minutes. One hiking route heads towards Cabo Verde before turning into a winding mountain path that leads to the bottom of the Barranco de Moya.
