Discover Segura: Medieval Old Town, Trails and Cheese

The old town of Segura is one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Gipuzkoa. Some gates of the former city wall can still be visited and today mark the area of the old town.

Culture and History

Lardizabal Palace, now Segura Town Hall, was built in the 17th century. The Casa Solar de Arrue has a Mudéjar art gallery on its façade, considered one of the few examples of this style in Gipuzkoa. The Casa Solar de Guevara dates from the Late Middle Ages and preserves a gate with a voussoir arch. The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the 16th century and has a Baroque-Rococo altarpiece.

Casa Ardixarra is one of the few examples of urban architecture from the early 16th century in Euskal Herria that was used as a residence and workshop building. The Medieval Interpretation Centre in Casa Ardixarra is considered unique in Euskal Herria. It can be visited independently.

Traditions and Sightseeing

The Holy Week processions of Segura are considered a tradition more than 300 years old and take place on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Since 1977, the Euskal Herria Dance Championship has been held in Segura. The Segura Tourist Office organises guided tours of the old town throughout the year.

Cheese and Craftsmanship

The Ondarre cheese dairy on the outskirts of Segura offers guided tours of its facilities with cheese tasting, as well as the opportunity to see and touch livestock and, seasonally, lambs. Ondarre also offers a 120-minute guided visit during which participants learn to make cheese by hand under the guidance of the shepherd.

Nature and Trails

The nature-and-culture circular route passes through the countryside around Segura; it focuses on the importance of water in the area, which remains significant to this day, as well as on mills and waterfalls. The circular route combines scenic impressions with traces of water use: its themes include mills and waterfalls as well as the current importance of water in the area. The Camino de Santiago runs through the interior of the Segura valley.

The Idiazábal Cheese Trail (GR-283) is a six-stage, circular hiking route. Its stages include Segura–Mirandaola and Ordizia–Segura. Together, the six stages of the GR-283 form a circle. Segura also has a permanent orienteering course with variants of varying difficulty, suitable for everyone. In orienteering, the course remains within the town, while the variants offer different levels of difficulty.

The Lurraldebus GO01 line serves the Zegama–Segura–Idiazabal–Olaberria–Beasain–Ordizia–Zaldibia route.
