Ibarrangelu: Laida, Laga and Ogoño

Coast and water sports

Laida defines the coast of Ibarrangelu with its almost one-kilometre length, fine golden sand and position as the largest beach at the Mundaka Estuary. Windsurfing, canoeing and sailing are possible at Laida Beach. Laga has a surf club and a surf school. These facilities have a specific connection to water sports; their current opening hours can be checked before visiting.

A footpath connects Ibarrangelu with Laga Beach. Antzora, a nudist cove, is located near Laida. Access begins in the Antzora district and follows a downhill footpath of approximately 500 metres to the cove. The approximate distance should be regarded as an estimate for planning your own day.

Paths and viewpoints

The PR-BI 165 route begins in Ibarrangelu and leads between farmhouses to the cemetery of Elantxobe in Bermokiz. After the turn-off in Bermokiz, it continues uphill through the forest to the Ogoño viewpoint. Under the title “Ruta hacia el mar”, the route is listed as 6.5 kilometres long, with an elevation gain of 165 metres and a duration of two hours. The path therefore connects the starting point in Ibarrangelu, the section through Bermokiz and the ascent to the Ogoño viewpoint.

Along this route, Ogoño lies on steep slopes and is exposed to strong winds: this applies to both the viewpoint and the summit. By contrast, the San Pedro de Atxarre viewpoint offers a 360-degree panoramic view over the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. Before a hike, the current opening hours or event times of the planned destinations can be checked, where such facilities or dates are part of the route.

Mountain and landscape

The San Pedro de Atxarre hermitage stands on the 312-metre-high summit of Mount Atxarre. At this landscape site, the summit, viewpoint and panoramic view across the biosphere reserve combine to create a striking interplay between mountain and expansive vistas. The hermitage and the viewpoint share the name San Pedro de Atxarre, while the Atxarre mountain summit determines the elevation.

Churches, chapels and townscape

The Church of San Andrés features a gilded Baroque altarpiece and a polychrome wooden ceiling in the Plateresque style. According to the description, this wooden ceiling is one of the few surviving examples on the Iberian Peninsula. The Church of Santa Maria Engracia, built in 1520, stands in Akorda. For churches and chapels such as San Andrés, Santa Maria Engracia and Sacred Heart of Jesus, current opening hours for visits can be checked in advance.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel is located beside Laida Beach. At the entrance to Ibarrangelu is the Ibaeta fronton court, which is notable for its construction and ornamented gable. In the Akorda district, a festival is held on 18 July in honour of Santa Marina. The designated feast day specifies 18 July as the date; current event details can be checked before travelling. This keeps attendance at the festival tied to the specific event date.
