Vitoria-Gasteiz – Medieval Layout and Salburua

The Casco Antiguo de Vitoria-Gasteiz preserves a medieval, almond-shaped city layout. Its shape is almond-shaped. The layout was created more than eight centuries ago, when Sancho VI “El Sabio” founded the city. With the city’s foundation by King Sancho VI in 1181, the veneration of the Virgen Blanca began in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Culture and History

At the Catedral de Santa María, “El pórtico de la luz” is a multimedia presentation. It shows how its portico changed over the centuries. The Museo de Ciencias Naturales is located in the Torre de Doña Ochanda. The Torre de Doña Ochanda is a 15th-century defensive tower. From the outside, the defensive tower defended the city wall.

Different periods therefore stand side by side in the historic cityscape: the almond-shaped layout dates back to the city’s foundation, while the Torre de Doña Ochanda, as a defensive tower, belongs to the 15th century. At the cathedral, the multimedia presentation focuses specifically on how the portico changed over the centuries.

Every year on the evening of 4 August, the lanterns of the Procesión de los Faroles are lit. In a procession, they move through the central streets of Vitoria-Gasteiz. The date, the evening and the route through the central streets are therefore each part of the procession described.

Nature

Salburua is designated as a Ramsar wetland of international importance. Salburua is also designated as a Site of Community Importance in the European Natura 2000 network. Ataria is a facility in Salburua Park east of Vitoria-Gasteiz. The facility was designed to convey the importance of the wetland ecosystem.

The two designations of Salburua refer to different designated protection frameworks. Within Salburua Park east of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Ataria is dedicated to conveying the importance of the wetland ecosystem.

The Olarizu Botanical Garden contains an arboretum. The arboretum comprises more than 500 tree species. These tree species are typical of European forests.
