Discover Lagrán: Trails, Culture and Holiday Apartments

Lagrán lies at the foot of the Sierra de Toloño-Cantabria and combines a striking mountain setting with historic buildings and a dense network of trails.

Culture and History

The parish church of Asunción de Nuestra Señora in Lagrán is a Renaissance building dating from the 16th century. Its richly decorated portal was also created in the 16th century in the Plateresque style.

The hermitage of San Bartolomé dates back to at least the 15th century. Outside the former walls of Lagrán stands the Palacete de Viana. It features two identical coats of arms; on the third floor there is a solana with round arches and an iron balcony.

Remains of a section of the walls of the fortified complex have been preserved to the west, next to one of its gates, the “Portal de Cristo”. The gate was recently restored.

Landscape

The Gesala / Salmuera route begins in the centre of Lagrán, leads into a beech forest and passes by Lagrán’s irrigation pond. It is considered to be of particular ecological value.

Hiking Trails

The Camino de las Carboneras begins in Lagrán’s main square. Along the route, three preserved stages in the development of charcoal-burning sites can be seen, making it possible to trace how charcoal kilns were constructed.

The Senda de las Carboneras is a historic riding trail. Until the mid-20th century, it was frequently used to transport charcoal to points of sale and to receive, among other things, wine and oil in exchange.

The PR-A 51 Senda del Mojón del Avellano passes through extensive beech forests and is equipped with information panels. At the Mojón del Avellano, it reaches the border with the territory of Treviño at an altitude of 950 metres.

The PR-A 55 Senda de Villaverde connects Lagrán with the neighbouring village of Villaverde. It passes through beech and oak forests as well as terrain offering wide-ranging panoramas.

The PR-A 52 Senda de Jaundel is an educational trail that runs entirely through woodland. More than twenty small information panels explain the surrounding area.

The PR-A 53 Senda de Pipaón follows the old route between Lagrán and Pipaón. Its course passes through sections of great scenic beauty and wide-ranging panoramas.

The historic long-distance trail GR-1 passes through Lagrán and follows its route through Álava. Jaunden can be reached from Lagrán via the trail to the Mojón del Avellano, which coincides in part with the GR 38.

Orientation on the GR 38

The GR 38 Interpretation Centre in Lagrán offers information panels, interactive exhibitions, a model of the trail and its points of interest, as well as audiovisual materials. Maps help hikers find their way.

Tradition

Traditionally, a route to Laguardia takes place in Lagrán on the Saturday closest to 15 August. It commemorates the former route taken by local residents to sell potatoes or charcoal or exchange them for oil or wine.
