Lermanda: Customs, Church and Cultural Sites

On the eve of Jueves de Lardero, children in Lermanda went from door to door singing for their neighbors. The singers of Jueves de Lardero asked their neighbors for alms.

Thus, on Jueves de Lardero, both singing and asking the neighborhood for alms were part of the traditional custom. The event took place at the doorsteps of the village and involved both the children and the neighbors they addressed. The named eve is a distinct time preceding Shrove Tuesday, when a different tradition was practiced in Lermanda.

On Shrove Tuesday, the villagers made a figure dressed in trousers, a jacket and a shirt. The carnival figure was named in honor of the village priest, Don Felipe.

The figure was therefore made as a human form through its clothing and bore a name referring to the village priest, Don Felipe. Both details are part of the described carnival custom: its creation by the villagers, its specific clothing and its naming in honor of the priest.

The sculpture of San Juan Bautista is associated with the parish church of San Sebastián in Lermanda. The baptismal font is the only surviving Romanesque feature of the church in Lermanda.

Water and Village History

Lermanda is completely surrounded by the Parque Empresarial Jundiz. The village had a central pond, which many residents used for catching frogs.

The pond was therefore located within the village, while the Parque Empresarial Jundiz completely surrounded Lermanda. Its former use by many residents was connected with catching frogs. The pond's water supply later changed as a result of the construction of the industrial estate.

The construction of the industrial estate interrupted the pond's water supply and turned it into a stagnant pool. The former pond was later converted into a square.

The sequence thus runs from the pond's water supply, through the stagnant pool, to its later conversion into a square.

According to the residents of Lermanda, the Pozo Redondo was a stone-lined well that did not run dry.
