Fornells combines a historic town centre with a protected natural area and an expansive bay. The Mediterranean architectural character of the town centre is particularly distinctive and is complemented by decorative elements of English influence. Culture and history
The Church of Sant Antoni is a small 19th-century religious building. It was built over an earlier oratory and is therefore one of the visible testimonies to the local history. Ruins of the Castell de Sant Antoni fortress remain; the present-day town of Fornells developed from this 17th-century fortress.
Another distinctive structure is the Torre de Fornells. The defensive tower was built between 1801 and 1802 to monitor the entrance to Fornells harbour and prevent enemy landings. It is one of the largest defensive towers on the island. At the end of July, Fornells also celebrates festivities in honour of Saint Antoni, featuring the traditional horse Jaleo.
Nature and harbour
Fornells is located in a protected natural area. This natural area includes the marine reserve in northern Menorca, which covers 5,199 hectares of sea between the Bay of Fornells and the Bay of Cap Gros. The Bay of Fornells is one of Menorca’s largest natural harbours and measures approximately five kilometres in length and two kilometres in width.
The harbour of Fornells provides shelter for small fishing boats. These boats fish in the waters off northern Menorca and reflect the town’s continuing maritime character.
Water and trails
The natural shelter provided by the Bay of Fornells, approximately four kilometres long and two kilometres wide, together with the Tramuntana wind that usually blows, creates favourable conditions for sailing. The bay also contains calm harbour waters where visitors can windsurf and sail with ease. In addition, the bay offers favourable conditions for water sports such as windsurfing, stand-up paddling and sailing.
Wind Fornells offers water sports equipment for hire. Organised excursions are also available from Fornells, including, for example, trips combining kayaking with snorkelling. The Son Parc–Cap de Cavalleria excursion passes through the entrance to Fornells harbour into the natural harbour and then continues into the bay.
The landscape can also be explored on foot: a hiking route along Menorca’s north coast leads to the Bay of Fornells and the fishing village there. Fornells can be explored via a detour along this route.
