A Fishing Harbour with a Long History
Portocolom’s fishing harbour is one of the largest harbours on the Mallorcan coast and is considered one of Mallorca’s most beautiful and emblematic harbours. As far back as Roman times, it provided shelter for boats. Over the centuries, it developed into one of the most important harbours in the east of the island of Mallorca. Lighthouse, Church and Viewpoints
The Faro de Portocolom is a work of maritime engineering. It was designed by Emili Pou and opened in 1863. The Parroquia Mare de Déu del Carme offers a different architectural accent: it is a single-nave basilica with side chapels, built by Pere d’Alcàntara Penya in 1890. The lighthouse opened 27 years before the church.
The Faro offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the harbour. A few steps from the lighthouse is the Mirador Josep A. Grimalt, with views across the coast and towards the lighthouse. The two viewpoints offer different perspectives: the Faro looks out over the sea and harbour, while the Mirador takes in the coast and lighthouse.
Sculptures of sea creatures along the waterfront promenade recall Portocolom’s maritime tradition. The creatures depicted include fish, an octopus, a seahorse and a lobster. These motifs bring the sea into the town’s history beyond its buildings and viewpoints.
Routes Through the Landscape and History
Sendero 22 – Closos de Can Gaià leads through a rural landscape to the archaeological site of Closos de Can Gaià. The Ruta Pintoresca por Portocolom is listed as 8 km long, with a duration of two hours. The two routes answer different planning questions: Sendero has a named archaeological destination, while the Ruta Pintoresca highlights its length and stated duration. Festivals and Nautical Activities
The Fiestas de Sant Jaume de Portocolom take place around 25 July and are linked to the celebrations of the Mare de Déu del Carme on 16 July. Activities include a traditional competition on a greased pole and a one-mile athletics race through the town. Nautical activities in the fishing harbour are connected with the presence of the Club Náutico de Portocolom.
