Culture

Villar de Vildas preserves remarkable traditional architecture. La Pornacal is the largest and best-preserved braña in Somiedo.

La Pornacal has around 33 teitos—the largest concentration of these huts in the park; a total of 370 teitos have been recorded there. In the center, there is a natural spring where you can refresh yourself during the route.

Braña de los Cuartos, also known as Braña Viecha or Braña Vieja, is older than La Pornacal. It comprises circular huts with roofs made of stone slabs, known as corros.

The brañas of Villar de Vildas comprise around 65 well-preserved teito structures covered with broom; their preservation is supported by the local residents. Vildéu is the first braña reached on the route to La Pornacal, about one kilometer after setting out.

Villar de Vildas received the Pueblo Ejemplar de Asturias award in 2004. El Cueto Tablao is a fortified archaeological site in the parish of Villar de Vildas.

Nature and Terrain

From Braña de los Cuartos, there is a sweeping view of the Cereizales Valley and, beyond it, the Leonese valleys of Laciana. About two kilometers beyond La Pornacal, there is a bridge along the route; from there, Cascada de Corralón can be seen on the opposite side of the valley. The area around Villar de Vildas includes some particularly well-protected deciduous forest, whose protection is primarily linked to a significant bear population.
