Geographical setting
Laguna de Sobia lies at an altitude of 1,360 metres in the Sierra de La Sobia below Pico La Siella and within Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Nature Park and Biosphere Reserve. With a water surface of approximately 1,500 m², it serves as a watering place for the livestock grazing in the surrounding area during the summer grazing season.
Nature
The hike to Laguna de Sobia is a mountain route without any major technical difficulties, but it has a considerable difference in elevation and steep slopes.
Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Nature Park is a limestone landscape. Moderate-difficulty hiking trails lead into this area from the villages of Carrea and Fresnéu in Teverga, where golden eagles, griffon vultures and choughs can be observed.
The different trail characteristics can be assessed separately when planning the day. Thus, the high-altitude route to the lagoon and the moderate-difficulty trails into the limestone landscape stand alongside one another as distinct nature experiences: one with a difference in elevation and steep slopes, the other offering the possibility of observing the birds of prey and choughs mentioned above.
Culture and History
Los Martinos Cave in Carrea, within the municipality of Teverga, is listed in the Inventory of the Cultural Heritage of Asturias as an inventoried archaeological site (IPCA-Y).
The Santuario del Cébrano contains a Romanesque-Byzantine image of the Virgin and Child, a gilded and polychrome Baroque altarpiece, a 15th-century crucifix and a depiction of Saint Anthony from the 17th century.
The presbytery of the Santuario del Cébrano is dated to the heyday of pre-Romanesque art, around the 9th or 10th century.
The custom of the “oferta del ramu” takes place at the Santuario del Cébrano. In this custom, a request to the Virgin is presented through coplas accompanied by traditional music. This music is attributed to approximately the 14th century.
Carrea is the birthplace of Bernardino “Mino” Fuenteseca (1910–1981), one of the leading masters of Asturian poetry.
The cultural themes can be considered independently of one another, ranging from archaeology and sacred art to traditional customs and literature.
A holiday apartment in Carrea can be viewed on the respective listing page in connection with travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions. The preferred focus for the day, such as nature trails, remains a separate choice alongside the cultural highlights of the village.
