Sinariega – Culture, History and Routes

Culture

The Chapel of San Nicolás is a Baroque chapel from the 18th century. It is covered by a ribbed vault, whose keystone depicts the Cross of Victory. The chapel has a portico between two stone antae.

The Chapel of San Cosme y San Damián is located in the Les Tercies district of Sinariega. It displays a vernacular style from the 18th and 19th centuries. It was built with funding from Indianos. It is currently in a state of ruin and has even lost its bell gable.

At the beginning of September, Sinariega celebrates a festival in honour of Saint Nicholas. Sinariega received the “Pueblo ejemplar de Parres” award after the jury recognised the residents’ work documenting and recovering elements of traditional culture.

La Llanaona is a fortified site near Sinariega at an altitude of approximately 380 metres. The fortification uses the steep natural slopes above the valley of the Río Sella, as well as a massive wall and an adjoining levelled platform.

La Llanaona was reused as a Republican defensive position; it included trenches, breastworks and a bunker gallery.

Routes

The “Ribadesella por Sinariega” cycling route passes through Sinariega and includes an irregular 3.5-kilometre climb with a 7.5 percent gradient.
