Discover Degaña: Nature, Mountain Trails and Asturian Culture

In the Degaña section of the Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña e Ibias Nature Park, high mountain ranges meet green valleys characteristic of the Cantabrian Mountains landscape. In the Degaña area of the nature park, there are oak forests as well as birches, yews and holly trees; the endangered wildlife there includes brown bears, wildcats and capercaillies.

Nature

Around Degaña, the Puerto Cerredo recreation area, at an altitude of 1,341 metres, offers views of Peña Mayor and the Cerredo River valley. The recreation area is located on an alpine meadow near Cerredo.

Hiking Trails and History

Por Donde Camina el Oso is an easy 19.6-kilometre GR-203 hiking stage from Sisterna to Zarréu in Degaña. The route passes through centuries-old oak and chestnut forests. Along the way, information panels provide details about several Roman mining sites where gold was sought using water.

The Senda Moura is a 21.06-kilometre, very difficult mountain route through the Cunqueiros Valley in the Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña e Ibias Nature Park. It reaches the Alto El Campillo viewpoint, offering views across the Degaña valley surrounded by mountains and forests. The route follows a historic track that was initially used to transport gold extracted in El Corralín and later served as a trading route for the Cunqueiros. These woodworkers sold their wooden products in Castile and Extremadura. The different lengths and difficulty levels can be compared directly for your planning. Culture

The church of Santa María de Cerredo stands in the original centre of Cerredo. It is designated as a BIC monument in the Principality of Asturias. Santa María de Cerredo has a rare wooden coffered ceiling in the Mudéjar tradition, decorated in red and black.

Casa Florencio is located near Degaña. It is a 19th-century manor house with a slate-roofed horreo and a chapel on the same estate. Casa Florencio serves as an exhibition hall and houses an interpretation centre of the Red Natural de Asturias (Rena).

The capital of Degaña preserves a charming old town with several neighbourhoods, traditional single-storey buildings and gateways through which livestock was once driven. In Degaña, visitors can still discover the craft of the Cunqueiros, the woodworkers.

Cycling

The first section of the cycling tour from Degaña to Teverga climbs for 12 kilometres along the AS-15 to Puerto de Cerredo.
