Cienfuegos in Quirós – Culture, Chapels and Mountain Trails

Cienfuegos is one of the villages in Quirós where decorated hórreos stand out. An old washhouse has also been preserved. For exploring the village, these two elements can be viewed as a distinct starting point before adding churches, chapels and trails.

Culture and Village Character

The Church of San Esteban in Cienfuegos has a significant baptismal font where San Melchor was baptised. Its single-nave body and square chancel are each covered by a pointed barrel vault. Cienfuegos is also a representative example of how rural homes were adapted to farming and livestock raising, using stone, clay and wood from the region.

The Ethnographic Museum of Quirós presents traditional customs from Quirós and includes a reconstruction of a traditional house from Quirós.

History and Chapels

Casa Basilio in Cienfuegos dates from the mid-18th century. In Villar de Cienfuegos, the Chapel of Santa Teresa was built in 1905. An earlier chapel in Villar de Cienfuegos burned down in 1899.

In the vicinity of Cienfuegos, the Chapel of San Pelayo stands on a hill by the Lindes River along the local QU-4 road and belongs to the parish of San Esteban de Cienfuegos. After decades of deterioration, it was restored by the responsible authorities at the end of the 1990s. A mass is held at the chapel every year, initiated by several residents originally from the parish.

Trails through Quirós

In the vicinity of Cienfuegos, a route passes the remains of the former Mina de Mataoscura. The route “Por los praos de Vil.lar de Cinfuegos y Las Chanas” is a circular route in the El Fochagueo area of Quirós. Another route, “Vil.lar de Cinfuegos–Las Chanas–Cuevas”, follows the old path that connected Las Chanas and Cuevas.

For personal planning, a circular route and a trail with a historic connecting function can be compared as different types of routes.

Connections and Regional Surroundings

The local QU-4 road, a secondary road, connects nine rural settlements with the AS-230 regional road (La Pola–Bárzana). It is the main transport connection for the parishes of Cienfuegos and L.lindes. Bárzana can also be found at the same regional level.Bárzana.
