Bárzana is particularly highlighted by the Senda del Oso: the official cycling route from Oviedo via the Senda del Oso ends here. Along the Quirós River, the route follows the former line of the mining railway. It passes through the Cuevafurada Gorge and partly runs through the Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Nature Park and Biosphere Reserve, as well as the Caldoveiro SCI Natura 2000 site. It reaches Bárzana via villages such as Veiga and San Salvaor. A GR hiking route from Bárzana, in the municipality of Quirós, also leads to the Senda del Oso. The route runs along the right-hand edge of the gorge; after the recreation area and the landing stage, it crosses the gorge via a wooden bridge.

For trip planning, you can consider the landscape, type of activity and route structure as separate focal points. Several interests can be organised according to these focal points. Those travelling with different expectations can first determine whether their main focus is an active experience on the trail, cultural insights or a visit tied to a specific time.

Culture and History

The Ethnographic Museum of Quirós presents the traditional customs of the people of Quirós and displays a reconstruction of a traditional house from Quirós. The municipal tourist information office is located in the same Ethnographic Museum of Quirós in La Fábrica, on Carretera General AS 229, 33117 Quirós. The Torre de Bárzana in Bárzana is listed in the Cultural Heritage Inventory of the Principality of Asturias under code IPCA-YA-53-008. A description of Bárzana dating from around 1800 mentions a tall, castle-like tower there that served as a prison.

Further information about the area can be found under Cienfuegos.

Events and Traditions

The Mercáu Quirosano takes place every year on the weekend closest to 1 May and is held in Bárzana. The 2026 Mercáu Quirosán featured handmade products, traditional craft workshops, street theatre and activities for children. Events featuring various farm animals, especially cattle and horses, are held annually at Bárzana's livestock market grounds.

In the wider Quirós area, the Alto La Cobertoria and Prau Llagüezos areas contain Neolithic burial mounds and dolmens. At Prau Llagüezos, the Fiesta del Corderu is known as an event of tourist interest.

Dates, crafts and animal events can be incorporated into your own plans separately according to the season and your main interests.
