Castropol on the Ría del Eo

Castropol is located on the Ría del Eo, a nature reserve with both fluvial and maritime characteristics. The historic town centre includes representative examples of manor houses and Indiano architecture. The historic ensemble of Castropol features Baroque, Modernist, Eclectic, Rationalist and regionalist-mountain architectural traditions. The town of Castropol was protected in 2004 as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of Historic Ensemble.

Culture

Parque Vicente Loriente was inaugurated in 1911. Parque Vicente Loriente and the buildings surrounding it form a Modernist ensemble. The history of the town also includes the Capilla de Santa María del Campo. It has a rectangular layout, with two small side structures – a chapel and a sacristy – and retains its foundation inscription on a plaque set into the façade. It was destroyed in the fire that devastated the town in 1587 and rebuilt in 1615.

The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol is attributed to the Baroque period and is located in Castropol. It preserves an important collection of Baroque altarpieces; the 17th-century Montenegro chapel houses a family pantheon bearing a coat of arms. The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol was a landmark on the Way of Saint James in Asturias.

Water and nature

Canoeing, kayaking and paddle boating, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing are all possible on the Ría del Eo. The Centro de Interpretación de la Ría del Eo presents the flora and fauna of the Asturian-Galician estuary, as well as the culture, history and economy of the region, using information panels and video and audio installations. The Centro de Interpretación de la Ría del Eo includes a viewpoint in the upper part of the building, offering views over the ría.

The signposted route to the Cascada del Cioyo passes several waterfalls before reaching the large waterfall. Castropol thus brings together several distinct attractions: architectural history and religious art alongside the estuary, water sports, waterfalls and a regionally influenced festival and food culture. These themes can be given different weight when planning a trip, without a cultural focus automatically determining a particular activity or accommodation style for the entire journey.

Festivals and cuisine

On the Sunday of the Corpus Christi weekend, the streets of Castropol’s historic centre are decorated with traditional floral carpets. The Alfombras Florales del Corpus is a festival of tourist interest in the Principality of Asturias. Oysters are considered the characteristic product of Castropol and the Ría del Eo.
