Caleao: Hiking Trails, Nature and Culture

The Ruta de la Cabeza l'Arcu (PR-AS 124) begins in Caleao's village square, crosses the river and ascends gently into the Pasera Gorge. This moderately difficult circular trail covers 11 km.

Hiking and Trails

Just before Caleao, the Ruta de los Arrudos (PR-AS 61) begins on a path leading to a recreational area next to the Capilla de San Antonio. Its first section runs through meadows along the Río Los Arrudos, crosses the river several times and reaches the La Calabaza footbridge, where the ascent through the Los Arrudos Gorge begins.

As a 22.9 km crossing from Caleao to La Infiesta, the Ruta de los Arrudos takes 8 hours and 5 minutes and has a moderate to high difficulty level. After descending to La Carbaza, the route joins the old Camín de Castilla, which the carriers from Caso regularly used in the past.

The La Felguerina–Caleao hiking route passes via the Capilla de San Antonio and a recreational area before reaching Caleao. The Travesía 3 Reservas is a six-day journey from Caleao to Covadonga that passes through three biosphere reserves.

Nature and Mountain Landscapes

In the Valle Xulió, a path leads through beech forests alongside cascades and pools in a stream, crossing the watercourse several times. Llagu Ubales is a small mountain lake accessible via a short detour from the Collada de Ubales and home to several amphibian species, including the alpine newt and the Iberian ribbed newt.

The Collada de Ubales is the highest point of the Ruta de los Arrudos and offers views of the Vega de Brañagallones, Cantu l'Osu, Tiatordos and the western massif of the Picos de Europa.

Culture and Tradition

The parish church of Santa Cruz la Real de Caleao was built at the end of the 16th century and has a southern portal in the Classicist tradition.

The Ermita de la Virgen de Ricao is a stone chapel with a single-nave layout and an attached sacristy. Since the 13th century, the inhabitants of Caleao have traditionally looked after the chapel and carried out roof and repair work when necessary.

The Feast of the Virgen de Ricao on 8 September includes a Mass and a procession from Caleao to the chapel.
