Sabiñán: Mudéjar, Hiking Trails and Olives

Culture and Architecture

Sabiñán is home to the Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol. It was built in the 16th century in the Aragonese Mudéjar style and is designated as a “Bien Catalogado del Patrimonio Cultural Aragonés” (Listed Property of Aragonese Cultural Heritage).

The main façade of the Palacio de los Condes de Argillo is approximately 34 metres long and consists of brick masonry set on a base of stone blocks. At the top, the Palacio is finished with an arcaded gallery, typical of larger buildings of the Aragonese Renaissance of the 16th and 17th centuries.

The present-day Ermita de San Roque was built in the 18th century; its construction was completed around 1730. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. The sections are covered by barrel vaults, while the central bay is spanned by a hemispherical dome on pendentives.

The Ermita de San Roque stands on a promontory and overlooks Saviñán as well as a wide stretch of the plain of the Jalón River. The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel has an octagonal tower whose lower section may have been a Muslim minaret. The church’s exterior façade features particularly remarkable Mudéjar decoration; it too is designated as a “Bien Catalogado del Patrimonio Cultural Aragonés” (Listed Property of Aragonese Cultural Heritage).

Trails and Landscape

The Andana al Enebro de Valcardera hike and the Camino de Morés y Purroy trail begin at the stone bridge in Saviñán. The Andana al Enebro de Valcardera leads through fruit orchards to the trail and ravine of Valcardera, as well as to the spring, basin and livestock watering troughs of Valcardera; the route is signposted.

The Camino de Morés y Purroy leads through the fields of La Casilla and La Arcada and runs parallel to the route of the former railway line from the 19th century as far as Morés. The SL-Z 26 hiking trail runs along the Acequia Somera and leads to Morés, which is approximately six kilometres away.
