Épila takes you from impressive architecture to wooded paths in the Sierra de Monegré. In the town, the Palacio del Conde de Aranda, together with the adjoining Convento de la Concepción, forms one of the most significant 15th-century ensembles in Aragón. There are also visible traces of the town fortifications, a Baroque-classical church and the route to Rodanas with its religious tradition.
Culture
Inside the Palacio del Conde de Aranda are several polychrome wooden ceilings with simple corbels. Their most important decoration consists of the coats of arms of the House of Aranda. The Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María is an 18th-century church built according to Baroque-classical models. The vault paintings are attributed to Fray Manuel Bayeu and depict six Marian litanies: Regina Patriarcarum, Regina Apostolorum, Regina Prophetarum, Regina Martirum, Regina Confesorum and Regina Virginum. The church also contains a significant organ, which has been restored over the last few decades.
History
Historical traces remain visible outside the interiors as well. The visible remains of the Muralla de Épila include a wall tower at the beginning of Calle Entremuros and a short section of wall. The Convento de la Inmaculada Concepción in Épila was initiated in 1621 by the Counts of Aranda. Different testimonies therefore stand side by side in the same place: the courtly ensemble, religious art and the surviving parts of the fortifications.
Nature and Trails
The PR-Z 35: Sendero de Monegré (Rodanas) is an officially catalogued and inventoried circular route within the Senderos Turísticos de Aragón. It leads through the wooded landscapes on the shady side of the Sierra de Monegré. Dense stands of pines, holm oaks, junipers and Spanish junipers provide refuge for diverse wildlife. The route follows comfortable paths suitable for BTT cyclists. The combination of a circular route, woodland landscape and cycling opportunities offers different perspectives on the stay, without requiring nature and cultural experiences to take place at the same pace.
Rodanas and Pilgrimage
To reach the Santuario de Rodanas, take exit 271 of the A-2, then the A-121, followed by the signposted turn-off to Rodanas; from there, it is another 6 kilometres. The Épila municipal tourist office is located on Calle del Bajo Palacio. Every year, pilgrimages from several surrounding towns, including Épila, take place at the Santuario de Rodanas. The destination can therefore be viewed through its paths, its sacred connections and its recurring pilgrimage traditions.
