Navasa: Holiday Apartments Between Romanesque Architecture and Mountain Landscapes

The Conjunto de las Eras y Bordas de Navasa ensemble was classified in 2001 as a Listed Asset of Aragonese Cultural Heritage. Navasa is located in the upper section of the Val Estrecha. The village lies at the foot of two distinctive peaks that channel the Barranco Abale. The Barranco Abale is a tributary of the Río Gállego.

Culture and History

The parish church of the “Church of the Assumption” in Navasa is a 12th-century building and reflects the influence of Jaca Romanesque architecture. Its tympanum features a central Christogram and figures inspired by the western tympanum of Jaca Cathedral. Two fragments from the same mural painting cycle have been preserved from the “Church of the Assumption” in Navasa. One surviving mural fragment depicts the Adoration of the Magi and the Flight into Egypt. A second surviving mural fragment depicts the heaven of the Evangelists with their symbols and two archangels.

The bordas of Navasa consist of a stable on the ground floor and an upper floor used for storing hay. The Bordas de Navasa ensemble preserves a uniform traditional architectural typology. The hermitage of Santa Eulalia in Navasa dates from the 16th century and features a beautiful pebble paving that forms large floral patterns.

Landscape

The peaks of Buyan, Punta Bacials and Punta de Sora, as well as Mount San Antón, are located in the vicinity of Navasa. These names add several distinct elevations in the immediate surroundings of the village to the description of the landscape.
