Discover Badaguás – Architectural Heritage, Mountain Landscapes and Golf Course

Badaguás lies on the sunny side of the Sierra de Albarún at an altitude of 1,041 metres and in the headwaters of the Gas River, a tributary of the Aragón. From the viewpoint at the parish church, the view stretches across the Val Ancha and the Campo de Jaca to Peña Oroel.

Culture

The Church of San Bartolomé is a Baroque building from the 17th and 18th centuries, surrounded by a dry-stone enclosure. In Badaguás, it was reopened for religious services in 2024. This brings its construction period, architectural form, enclosure and more recent history of use together in one place.

In the centre of Badaguás, the Purísima Concepción Hermitage was the former parish church. The restored building is Gothic and dates from the 15th century. The two religious buildings therefore differ in their historical classification and architectural character.

The traditional architecture of Badaguás included numerous tuff-stone chimneys. Traditional houses were generally roofed with stone slabs. There were numerous bordas around Badaguás, outbuildings used to store hay and straw for livestock. These architectural elements complement the churches with a picture of the everyday and economic architecture of the time.

The former inhabitants of Badaguás celebrated the patronal festival in honour of San Bartolomé on 24 August. The feast day is therefore part of the traditional local heritage and is directly connected with the name of the parish church.

Landscape

The altitude and the view from the parish church provide two different points of reference for the landscape: on the one hand, Badaguás lies at 1,041 metres on the sunny side of the Sierra de Albarún; on the other, the view opens across the Val Ancha and the Campo de Jaca to Peña Oroel. The headwaters of the Gas River, a tributary of the Aragón, provide another geographical context for the area.

Albarín and Bolás are peaks in the immediate surroundings of Badaguás. Buyan is a nearby peak, and Mount San Antón is also located in the vicinity of Badaguás.
