Discover Cofita: Templar Church, Landscape and Wine

Cofita is home to the Romanesque Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena. The Templar Order built and founded it during its stay in the commandery and castle of Monzón. Its pointed-vaulted ceiling is characteristic of the transition between Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Inside, there are remnants of medieval murals from the 12th and 13th centuries. Engravings depicting Templar knights on foot and horseback can be seen on the outside of the church.

For your visit, these cultural traces can be grouped into different areas of focus: architecture, surviving medieval images and depictions of the Templar Order each represent a distinct facet of the area's history.

Travel dates, room category and cancellation policies are part of the accommodation selection; regardless of this, culture, landscape, festivals and wine shape the themes of the area.

Landscape

Las Gesas is a wild and dry area of Cofita with holm oaks, rosemary and thyme. Along the banks of the Cinca, Cofita has an irrigated garden landscape whose water comes from the Canal de Aragón y Cataluña. The Acequia de Paules irrigates Cofita's gardens and was built by the Templars in 1250.

The dry landscape of Las Gesas and the irrigated gardens along the Cinca form two distinct themes that you can consider separately when planning your days in Cofita.

Festivals

Cofita celebrates its main festival days on 25 August in honor of Saint José de Calasanz. The Fiestas de San Blas include bonfires and a communal dinner and are associated with the celebrations of Santa Águeda. The Fiestas mayores of Cofita include a dinner in honor of the Cofita melon. On the eve, a Costillada is one of the gastronomic events of the Fiestas mayores.

For scheduling purposes, the fixed August date, the associated celebrations and the gastronomic elements can be distinguished as different forms of festivity.

Wine and Gastronomy

Bodega Sers in Cofita produces wine with the Denominación de Origen Somontano designation. Bodegas Sers offers an aroma experience and a tasting of all six wines produced by the winery. Wine enthusiasts can distinguish between the tasting and the vineyard excursion as two different ways of experiencing the winery. The “Naturaleza en el viñedo de Bodegas Sers” experience includes an excursion into the vineyards with the owners, during which visitors discover the grape varieties and how they coexist with nature.

The themes can be distinguished by their character: the church combines architectural form, surviving medieval images and depictions of the Templars; the landscape contrasts dry terrain with irrigated gardens. At the festivals, religious occasions, fire and communal meals are accompanied by melon and Costillada. The winery broadens this range with tastings, an aroma experience and an excursion into the vineyards with the owners. In this way, culture, landscape, festival traditions and wine stand alongside one another as distinct ways of experiencing the area.
