Valencina De La Concepción – Dolmen, Museum and Local History

Valencina De La Concepción offers a deep insight into megalithic culture: the archaeological zone covers more than 400 hectares and is one of the largest settlements of the 3rd millennium BC. At the same time, it is one of the most significant centres of megalithism on the Iberian Peninsula. The archaeological zone of Valencina is listed in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Archaeological Zone.

Culture

Among the defining features of the archaeological zone are two dolmens with different layouts. The Dolmen de la Pastora is a tholos with a circular chamber measuring approximately 2.5 metres across and a corridor more than 45 metres long. Its entrance is aligned with the sunset.

The Dolmen de Matarrubilla has a chamber-and-corridor layout with a maximum length of 32 metres. Its chamber contains a large, worked marble block with a depression on its upper surface, which may have served as an altar or sacrificial table. The dimensions help distinguish the two structures not only by their names but also by their spatial scale. Their different features give this subject its own distinct emphasis.

Museum

The Museo Municipal is located in the Casa de la Cultura on Plaza de España and displays archaeological remains dating from 2500 to 1500 BC. The Valencina museum offers visits to the Dolmen de la Pastora. Advance reservations are required for visiting hours at the Museo de Valencina and the dolmens in order to secure a place.

Pilgrimage Tradition

The Romería de Torrijos has been recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía. During the romería, Nuestra Señora de la Estrella Coronada is taken by carriage on Sunday morning to the Hacienda de Torrijos, where the Capilla del Santísimo Cristo de Torrijos is located. The Hacienda de Torrijos is a former Arab military fortress with walls and towers. Religious tradition, the procession and the historic architectural character therefore provide three distinct perspectives on this part of the town’s history.
